ORTOFON SPU GTX S and SPU GTX E: From “Revival” to “Reinvention”
Ortofon is expanding its renowned SPU series with the SPU GTX S and SPU GTX E models, introducing a new generation of cartridges that blend traditional sound design with modern audio technology innovations.
An Innovative Step for the SPU GT Series
With the launch of the SPU GTE 105, the SPU GT series was revived after about 30 years. Now, Ortofon continues this journey with the GTX S and GTX E models, which combine the characteristic powerful sound of the SPU GT with top-tier performance for today’s vinyl playback. Both models feature an integrated MC step-up transformer, developed in collaboration with Swedish firm Lundahl, which delivers a remarkably detailed and dynamic sound signature.
Key Feature of the GTX Series: Consistent Material for Headshell and Bottom Cover
The GTX series introduces a key innovation: for the first time, both the G-type headshell and the bottom cover are crafted from the same fiber-reinforced polymer material. This choice enhances the structure’s rigidity and reduces unwanted resonances. Building on the material advancements introduced in the SPU Century model, the GTX design ensures resonance-free, stable construction for precise sound reproduction.
Precision Craftsmanship in Production
All SPU GTX cartridges are handmade by skilled technicians in Denmark. The unibody housing, crafted from a specially developed fiber-reinforced co-polymer, provides outstanding stability and resonance damping. The seamless construction, which securely encases the generator, is designed for durability and precise sound reproduction.
Choice of Two Stylus Types: Spherical and Elliptical
True to the SPU series tradition, the GTX offers a choice of two stylus types:
- SPU GTX S is equipped with a spherical (round) stylus, delivering a warm and full-bodied sound.
- SPU GTX E features an elliptical stylus, allowing for finer detail capture and ideal for sophisticated setups.
Ortofon thus re-engages a classic debate among audiophiles: “Spherical or elliptical stylus?”
Built-In Step-Up Transformer for Enhanced Flexibility
The GTX models include a built-in step-up transformer, providing higher output, which allows direct connection to any standard phono stage or amplifier—similar to a moving magnet cartridge. Ortofon developed this transformer in collaboration with Lundahl Transformers, a company renowned for its premium audio transformers.
A Modern Classic for Vinyl Enthusiasts
The SPU GTX cartridges combine the timeless musicality and distinctive sound that have characterized Ortofon’s SPU series for decades with innovations that meet today’s demands for high-quality audio reproduction.
